Once upon a time, there was a place called All God’s Village. On the surface, it was a quiet, peaceful place. People went about their lives, with no stress from the outside world. This village, however, held a dark secret. It was known by all, spoken of only by those that needed to speak about it. It was believed that when twins were born, it was really one person whose soul had been split in two. It was also believed that the twin that was born second was the elder twin, as they had graciously allowed the other ‘younger’ twin to be born first.

In this village, twins were meant to be reunited as one. Twins served a purpose.

All God’s Village played host to the Hellish Abyss, known as “X” was a hidden, gaping hole within the village, causing blindness to anyone that dared look into it. Criminals and those cast from the village were its attendants, eyes sewn shut to keep from looking into the forbidden place. The Hellish Abyss was like a living thing, ultimately guarded over by the veiled priests of the village. In order to keep the Abyss satisfied, every ten years the Crimson Ritual was preformed.

This ritual served two purposes—the first was to pacify the Abyss, and the second was to reunite the twins’ souls as one in the body of the elder. This tradition has continued for years.

During Sae’s lifetime, there was an unusual event. Two sets of twins were born in close proximity. The first set, boys of the Tachibana house, were Itsuki and Mitsuki. The second set, girls of the Kurosawa house, were Yae and Sae. The four became close friends growing up. Generally, it was preferred to use twin girls over twin boys for the ritual, as it was believed that twin girls shared a closer bond. In an attempt to protect their friends, however, Itsuki and Mitsuki volunteered to perform the ritual. Their attempt failed, leaving Itsuki alone and broken, his once black hair now snow white.

In his last and most desperate attempt to save his friends he devised a plan for Yae and Sae to escape the village. Sae was reluctant to leave the village—part of her wanted to perform the ritual (she was the one to be killed, she wanted to be united with her sister), but her deep love for Yae led to her agreement. Itsuki successfully helped the two escape, but was caught by the villagers and jailed for his crime. He hung himself in his cell shortly after.

Being pursued by the villagers, Yae and Sae struggled to stick together on the dark forest path. When Sae tumbled from the path, Yae kept running, leaving the other behind. Sae was found by the villagers and brought back home. Distraught, Sae was convinced that Yae would return to her, ready to complete the ritual together. Her emotional state only worsened when she was shown Itsuki’s body, still hanging from the noose in his cell.

The Village Leaders (her own father included) delayed the ritual as long as possible, sacrificing a man that was visiting their village to the Abyss as a Kusabi. The Abyss still hungered, and was not satisfied by this sacrifice. The village could wait no longer.

Sae still believed that her sister would return to her.

Without Yae, the likelihood of the ritual being successful was very low. Sae was hung in an attempt to recreate the ritual, and her body was tossed into the Abyss. When no butterfly emerged from the Abyss, they knew they had failed. The Hellish Abyss unleashed the fury of The Calamity, a darkness that destroyed ever soul that resided in the village.

There was to be no resting in peace in All God’s Village.

Sae’s ghost reigned supreme over all other ghosts in the village. She controlled the mourners, the kusabi, even the priests—all down to the most insignificant villagers. There were a few ghosts that escaped her bloodthirsty rule. Itsuki, and his sister Chitose both acted independently of Sae. All those unfortunate enough to wander in to All God’s Village were never seen again.
This cycle continued until the day when Mio and Mayu entered the village. Sae lured Mayu deep into the village, implanting her own soul to the girl. She was intent on completing the ritual, using Mio as her Yae. Once Sae had Mayu under her control, the only thing that was left was to wait for Mio to come and rescue her.

But all did not go according to plan. She had relied on Mio’s love for her sister to bring her back, the girl had run away…again.

Sae had been left all alone…again.
